Subject Leader Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact Overview - Art and D.T
‘Every child has an enquiring mind about the world and their place in it.'
At Sherwood Park the intent of our Art and DT curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and maximises the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. The curriculum will enable the children to discover new artists and designers, learn key skills and understand how to use and apply this knowledge to impact their own work and prepare them to take part in the development of today’s rapidly changing world. By facilitating creative thinking and reflection of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, we want to encourage our children to make positive changes to their quality of life. At Sherwood Park we want to create autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.
Intent
- To build an Art and DT curriculum which develops learning and results in pupils knowing more, remembering more and understanding how knowledge and skills can be applied to their own work. It will enable pupils to create work with a real purpose in terms of displaying and sharing the pieces they create and showcasing the skills and progress they have made.
- We want to provide a balanced and broad curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils. This will prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life.
- To design a progressive curriculum with appropriate subject knowledge and skills with key themes by taking inspiration from the greats, developing ideas, designing, creating and evaluating so that children can reach and exceed their potential at Sherwood Park Primary School and beyond.
- To apply the skills acquired within Art and DT lessons to cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth; for example, researching geographical locations to support their work on landscape painting or using DT as a medium to express emotion and thought to enhance their personal, social and emotional development.
Implementation
- Clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum-teaching and learning should show progression across all key stages within the strands of Art and DT
- A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth
- Subject wide cross curricular teaching-where applicable, skills taught for each halftermly block within the Art and DT curriculum are linked to the main learning topic for that term e.g. sketching Roman Artefacts.
- Educational visits and visitors into school-where applicable links to Art and DT will be made to develop the children’s learning experiences. At Sherwood Park we particularly value local artists and designers to ensure the learning is relevant to the children.
- Differentiated challenge questions using Blooms taxonomy for pupils to reflect upon their learning in a philosophical/open manner
- British Values and PSHE-Children will learn and revisit the importance of our world, their own role within the world and how it should be treated. For example, art and DT work inspired by Black History month, Well-being Week etc.
- A means to display and celebrate the pupils’ learning within school as well as the wider community.
Impact
- More children will achieve age related expectations and reach their full potential in Art and DT at the end of their cohort year-teachers to reflect on standards achieved against planned outcomes.
- Children will retain knowledge about artists and designers and skills from each unit of work and understand how to use and apply this to other areas of the curriculum and beyond.
- As reflective artists and designers, children will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood.
