UNICEF's Rights Respecting Schools

Our school council consists of annually elected members representing each year group across school. The role of our school council members is to provide a voice for the children at Sherwood Park Primary School. They meet regularly with Mrs Olenka and are proactive in improving life for children in the school by raising any concerns and discussing their ideas.  We respect the views and contributions made by our school council and aim to use these to make improvements to the school whenever possible.

Over the past few years, our School Council members have been working hard to ensure every member of our school community is aware of children’s rights. They have done this through creating information leaflets, leading assemblies, raising money for local and national charities and much more!  As a Gold Rights Respecting School, we are continuing to work hard to ensure the rights of each child is at the heart of our school culture and ethos.

What is RRSA?

During one of our school council meetings, it was discussed that the children would like to raise awareness about the RRSA with the adults at home.  Some of our dedicated school council members spent a couple of lunchtimes with Mrs Olenka putting together a helpful leaflet for adults to learn more about RRSA.  Please click on the icon below to have a look!

Our 2023-2024 Class Charters

Each year, we spend time at Sherwood Park discussing with our classmates what our class charter will look like and what it will focus on.  Each class produces a class charter and displays it either outside their classroom or inside their classroom.  We enjoy creating our class charters each year!

Our Rights Respecting Mascot

The school council ran a competition to find the perfect RR mascot for Sherwood Park.  It was a tough decision as they had so many great entries but they finally decided on the Rights Respecting Caterpillar who was created by a very talented Year 5 pupil.

We've had our Rights Respecting Caterpillar professionally printed and mounted onto our school gates!

Examples of our RRSA work at Sherwood

Examples of some of the work the children at Sherwood Park have been doing around Rights Respecting Schools.

The children at Sherwood Park enjoyed celebrating Internation Children's Day on Monday 20th Novemeber 2023.  Children across the school focused on different elements.

In EYFS, children looked at identity and created some lovely pieces based on their own identiy!

In Year 1 and Year 2, the children were learning about the history of Children's Day.  Year 3 and Year 4 spent time looking at their responsibilities and also decided between "needs and wants".  Year 5 and Year 6 children were challenged to think about basic needs, importance of expressing themselves and having a voice in decision making at Sherwood.  They also had a look at the Global Goals!

We've done it!!! G O L D!!!

In January 2024, we were awarded with the Gold award!  To mark this huge achievement, we celebrated on 28th March 2024 by enjoying “gold” related treats such as golden time and a golden snack.  Louie French (Conservative MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup) presented the school council and Mrs Olenka (RRSA Lead) with their gold banner and official certificate.

We joined forces with Barrington Primary School to make some plans.  We had a great Q & A session with Louie French about recycling in Bexley.
