At Sherwood Park Primary School, we aim to develop in every child a love of mathematics and the confidence and aspiration to solve problems. We want our pupils to become enthusiastic, resilient and curious mathematicians who enjoy exploring mathematical ideas and making connections.

Speaking and listening are an important part of our mathematical learning environment. We encourage children to explain how they have approached a problem, discuss why they have chosen a particular strategy and listen to and learn from the ideas of others. Through mathematical talk, pupils develop the confidence to articulate their thinking and use mathematical vocabulary accurately.

Mathematics is an essential life skill, and we are committed to providing a curriculum that develops secure mathematical understanding. We have embraced a mastery approach to mathematics, with the White Rose Maths scheme of learning supporting curriculum planning and progression across the school.

Our approach allows pupils to spend sufficient time developing a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts, particularly in number. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils have opportunities to explore mathematics in meaningful and real-life contexts. Where appropriate, children move through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, using practical resources and manipulatives to develop conceptual understanding before applying increasingly formal mathematical methods.

We recognise that some children can develop anxiety or a lack of confidence in mathematics from an early age. At Sherwood Park, we work hard to create a positive, supportive and inclusive mathematical culture where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn and challenge is embraced.

Our aim is for every child to develop mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, alongside the confidence, resilience and curiosity to tackle new challenges. Above all, we want our pupils to discover the enjoyment and wonder of mathematics and to develop a lasting love of number and learning.
